SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS

 

I am a multifaceted journalist (web, radio, television, print journalism) who has specialised in humanitarian, social and development issues relating to the Third World and the Internet. While I was educated and trained as a lawyer, I have spent all my career in communications, working as a journalist in numerous African countries, in Asia, and in North and South America. I currently teach postgraduate courses in Online Journalism in France and radio reporting to African journalists. I am bilingual (English-French) and have strong computer skills.

 

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

 

 

Current employment
 
  • Radio training coordinator for Radio Okapi. Fondation Hirondelle (Media for Peace and Human Dignity), Swiss NGO, and MONUC (United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo). D.R.C. 10/2002-12/2002.

    Overseeing a radio journalism training program in the D.R.C. (Kinshasa, Mbandaka, Gbadolite, Kisangani, Kindu, Kananga, Bunia, Goma, Bukavu, Kalemie) where 100 journalists are skilled up in news and current affairs radio reporting and digital audio editing.

Journalism

 
  • Online Journalist. Midi Libre, French daily. 2001-2002.

  • Print journalist. SYFIA International, a francophone press agency that concentrates on topics of concern to Africa. Wide range of international publications (details on request). France & Africa. 1994-2000.

  • Radio producer. Fréquence Verte, Syfia’s monthly radio magazine on African rural issues. This program is broadcast by 100 french-speaking radio stations and promotes the work of African journalists. 1996-2000.


  • Radio and television reporter. Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Covered numerous news and current affairs stories on immigration, ethnic-religious minorities, and human rights issues in Canada. 1985-1993.

  • Free-lance journalist. Middle-East : covered stories in Lebanon, Pakistan and Yemen for Canadian newspapers. France : La Cinquième (national television), Le Monde (national newspaper). 2000-2002.

 

Humanitarian experience

 
  • Radio producer, writer and sound editor. Contrechamp Humanitaire radio series : five hour-long radio programs for the ICRC. 1994-1996.

    These programs dealt with humanitarian issues (refugees, women and war, landmines, child soldiers, international humanitarian law) facing 5 African countries (Rwanda, Angola, Kwazulu-Natal, Somalia and Liberia). They were aired on French and Canadian national radio stations, the BBC world service, and by more than 30 African radio broadcasters.

 

Networking and leadership skills

 
  • Coordination of an international network of journalists (Burkina Faso, Benin, Cameroon, Senegal, Mauritania, Madagascar) to produce a monthly African radio program, Fréquence Verte (see above). 1996-2000.

    • Regular trips were made to Africa to recruit and train over twenty African journalists in current affairs radio reporting, writing for radio, interviewing techniques, digital sound editing and use of Internet tools.

    • From France, I followed up on their development via distance learning using new technologies (chat, email, instant messaging, webphone, program and remote desktop sharing).

    • In France, I also put into place a system of Internet conferencing for editorial meetings between the bureau chiefs of 9 countries.
